Third Quarter General Membership Meeting is Just Around the Corner~

Dear Neighbors,

This is a shout out to remind you that the third quarter general membership meeting will be this coming Monday evening July 16th.  It will be held at the St. Louis Activity Center at 5602 Arsenal Street.  The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm.   Dee Brown of the St. Louis Safety Group  will be a panelist in our discussion on crime and public safety.  The panel will also include Officer Don Veile, Community Outreach Officer and Board Member, Jill Guyton, Chair of Safety Committee.  i am pleased to report that our Alderpersons Annie Rice and Joe Vollmer will be present, as well.  The evening will end with something to cool you off  ice cream!

Our Heroes Appreciation Day is moving along nicely.  We will be serving barbecue Thursday, July 19th here at the office located at 4950 Southwest Avenue.  I am very excited to announce the St. Louis Activity Center  has been working very closely with us this year.  Many hands do make for light work!    There is still time to sign up.  If you would like to help, email me at: [email protected]

Third Quarter General Membership Meeting ~ Attention~

Dear Neighbors,

It seems Mother Nature has given  us some relief from the heat!

Due to scheduling conflicts with our speakers, the third quarter general membership meeting date is being changed.  Please  note, Monday, July 16,  2018  is the new date. We will meet at the St. Louis Activity Center located at 5602  Arsenal Street St. Louis, MO.  The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm.  We have a panel discussion of crime and public safety.  Our panelists will be Officer Don Veile, community outreach officer for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police;  Dee Brown of the St. Louis Safety Group  Jill Guyton, SWGNA Board member and chair of safety committee; and Kevin Bailey, Neighborhood Stabilization Officer. 

Your attendance will help us show appreciation for our block captains as we plan to honor them.

We plan to end the meeting with some pretty cool treats!

 

  Plans are moving along nicely for our annual George and Sandy Grbac Heroes Appreciation Day which will be Thursday, July 19, 2018.  We are excited to announce what is new this year, the St. Louis Activity Center is collaborating with us!  We are grateful because they are lending a helping hand with cooking, baking and planning.  We still need your help though.  Can you help us thank a hero?   If you can volunteer one or two hours please call the office at 314-772-6082 or email me, at [email protected]

Shout Out! Upcoming Events in the Southwest Garden Neighborhood

Hello Neighbors,

Thursday, May 10, 2018:  Last Benefit Assistance Program!  Our social worker, Donna Adams, will be at the SWGNA office located at 4950 Southwest Avenue from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. (Please note that the funding is ending for this program in June.)

Saturday, June 2, 2018:  St. Louis Urban Symposium 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Demonstration Garden 4646 Senandoah Avenue St. Louis 63110.  The cost is $15.00.  To register go to www.Brightsidestl.org

Saturday, July 7, 2018:  Fireworks at Sublette Park

Thursday, July 19, 2018:  The Annual George and Sandy Grbac Heroes Appreciation Day at the office 4950 Southwest Avenue.  11:00 am to 8:00 pm.  New this year, the St. Louis Activity Center will be joining us in putting on this event!  Stay informed by checking the www.southwestgarden.org 

Monday, July 23, 2018:  Third Quarter General Membership Meeting 7:00 pm at the St. Louis Activity Center 5602 Arsenal Street.  There will be a panel discussion on crime and public safety.  An ice cream social will conclude the meeting.

Saturday, September 8, 2018:  NEW! Concert Extravaganza  in Sublette Park.  Line Dancing, Food Trucks and live entertainment for young and old alike!

Other news:  Just thought you would like to see a few pictures from the second quarter general membership meeting.  The Southwest Garden Neighborhood presented an award to Former 8th Ward Alderman, Steve Conway, for his 27 years of service in the Southwest Garden Neighborhood.  Sandy Grbac baked and decorated a lovely cake to honor Steve.

Second Quarter General Membership Meeting is Just Around the Corner~

Dear Neighbors,

 

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 23, 2018.  The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm and will be held at the St. Louis Activity Center 5602 Arsenal Street.    On the agenda will be a quality of life panel discussion with our Alder persons Annie Rice and Joe Vollmer.  Our new Neighborhood Improvement Specialists, Kevin Bailey and Brian Kolde will be present, as well.  This is great opportunity to let them know your concerns about city services.  Check out the Communicator for additional details April

We will have a recycling update with Rachel Greathouse of Brightside STL and election of officers.

News You Might Like to Know About ~

Hello Neighbors,

Happy Spring!  Hopefully the clouds, wet, cold and dampness is behind us and there a brighter days ahead.  April is the month of showers and it is also the month of our second quarter general membership meeting.    The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 23, 2018.  The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm and will be held at the St. Louis Activity Center 5602 Arsenal Street.  Check out all the details for the agenda and our line up of guests on page one of the most recent Communicator.   Just click April

When reading the Communicator take a look at page 3 for upcoming dates.  It’s a great opportunity to mark your calendar, too!  April

 We are also planning to hold our third annual seedling and plant exchange!    

This is great motivation to thin out those garden beds.  Instead of throwing  the plants in the green waste dumpster wrap your plants and bring them to the general membership meeting.  Your plants bring joy to someone else’s garden and you get to take something home without spending a dime!  Pete Nicolazzi will once again coordinating the effort.  Pete also plans to bring in packets of Missouri native species seeds and some young pine trees!  Check out the Communicator for additional details: April   Oh I almost forgot to mention,

Pete is going to bring seeds that are butterfly friendly! 

Just a final note, I am also  working with Rachel GreatHouse and BRIGHTSIDE STL to have available a blue recycling bin for each person in the audience.

Become a Member~

Hello Neighbors,

A special round of applause is extended to all of you who have become members for the 2018 calendar year!  I will post the updated list in the Communicator spring issue during the first week of April.

With spring just around the corner, it’s a great opportunity to become a member of the Southwest Garden Neighborhood Association!   We work with residents, businesses, elected representatives, city officials and other organizations for a better neighborhood. (We can’t do it without YOU!)

Programs and volunteers beautify the community,  improve public safety , and provide fun things to do.  Membership follows the calendar year and entitles you to voting rights at general membership meetings.  Two votes for family membership; one vote each for business or individual.  Family is $20;  Business is $25;  Individual is $10; and, Senior is $6

Upcoming Elections for Board of Directors~

Dear Neighbors,

Upcoming Elections for Board of Directors: 

Our association will have its annual elections for board members, at the April 23, 2018, general membership meeting.   There are two positions open – member at large and Third Vice President.   Each position is for a term of two years. We seek representation from all geographic areas of our neighborhood.   Board members are expected to attend monthly meetings, quarterly neighborhood meetings, various events and be a current in dues as a paid member of SWGNA.  If interested, please email ([email protected]); or mail a letter of interest to the office. The deadline for nomination is Friday, March 23, 2017, to be eligible for the April 23rd election. In order to vote in this upcoming election, dues must be received by March 23rd.

Just a Friendly Reminder ~ Special Election is Tomorrow February 13th

Dear Neighbors,

Tomorrow is an important day for everyone living within the 8th ward.  It is a special election to vote in our new Alderperson – Annie Rice or Paul Fehler.

Thanks to the partnership with Shaw Neighborhood Association and Tower Grove East Neighborhood Association and our neighborhood a forum was held last Monday evening between the two candidates.  Thanks too, the President of the Shaw Neighborhood Association, for passing on this link, so you can have an opportunity to listen to the audio of the event.

Upcoming:   Citizens on Patrol Academy

On another note The St. Louis Metropolitan Police is once again holding the citizens on patrol academy.  This twelve week course will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 pm from March 7th to May 23rd.

The St. Louis Area Agency on Aging is once again offering the benefit assistance program for any individuals who need a circuit breaker tax credit completed.  This is a free service for seniors and disabled individuals.  The location will be the Southwest Garden Neighborhood Association office located at 4950 Southwest Avenue St. Louis, MO  63110.  Donna Adams, the social worker, will be available at this site on the 2nd Thursday of the month from March through April.  Donna will be available from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm.  To schedule an appointment call 314-612-5918.  Walk-in’s are welcome, too.  Click for additional details:  Circuit Breaker Flyer 2018

Last Minute Shout Out for 8th Ward Candidates Forum~

Dear Neighbors,

There is a special election for the 8th Ward Alderman scheduled Tuesday, February 13th.  Join us this evening February 5th for an opportunity to hear from the candidates seeking to represent the ward on the Board of Aldermen.  Candidates Annie Rice and Paul Fehler will participate in a moderated discussion.  The location will be the Rehabilitation Services for the Blind, 3867 Magnolia.  The event will begin at 7:00 pm and conclude at 8:30 pm.

Last Minute Shout Out For our Membership Drive @ Sandrina’s
