About Our Neighborhood

Our Neighborhood

Southwest Garden is a large neighborhood just west of the Missouri Botanical Garden. We are located South of I-44, East of Hampton, and west of Tower Grove Park and the Missouri Botanical Garden. We are less than 10 minutes from downtown, St. Louis University, Washington University in St. Louis, the primary BJC HealthCare campus, and Forest Park.

Southwest Garden is composed of several diverse sections that include large and gracious private homes, some of the City’s most architecturally significant apartment buildings, as well as tidy bungalows, and Sublette Park, the highest geographical point in the City of St. Louis.

  3. Coordinate with residents on improving the quality of life in the neighborhood.

Gardenside Subdivision Special Business Taxing District

Gardenside Subdivision Special Business Taxing District (Gardenside)

Gardenside is a special taxing district, where residents living east of Kingshighway near the Missouri Botanical Garden have voted since 2006 to tax themselves an additional 85 cents per $100 assessment for the purpose of hiring additional public safety officers to patrol their streets. Governed by a seven-member public commission, Gardenside regularly meets to assign duties and patrols to their hired off-duty St. Louis police officers. A neighborhood watch team works with the Commission to inform its board of neighborhood trends and concerns. The Commission generally meets the first Monday of the month at 6:30 pm at the neighborhood office (4950 Southwest Avenue).
